The quiet life of a married couple in the Australian outback is disrupted by the arrival of the mysterious Crossley. The eccentric newcomer claims that whilst living amongst the Aboriginal people, he learnt the secret of a lethal shout powerful enough to inflict death from a distance. Their encounter with the stranger lays bare the couple’s hidden fears, obsessions, and desires. Jerzy Skolimowski weaves together a surreal parable, horror, psychological drama, and a formal experiment. Produced in the UK and featuring brilliant performances by Alan Bates, John Hurt, and Susannah York, The Shout is one of the most critically acclaimed films from Skolimowski’s émigré period, when the director collaborated with international producers and stars of world cinema.
