In this Italian-Yugoslav co-production, Jerzy Kawalerowicz returns to the theme of the struggle between soul and body – or perhaps the body and social norms – a theme he explored in Mother Joan of the Angels and to which he returned throughout the majority of his career. A Catholic priest begins to lust after a young, charming woman, which puts his vow of celibacy to the test. Maddalena is a tale of passion and love, constrained by a culture that breeds unhappiness. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Ennio Morricone.
