What if Alice and the White Rabbit fell in love, with the Queen of Hearts determined to tear them apart? Jerzy Gruza and Jacek Bromski’s Alice is a Belgian, Polish, and British co-production that playfully combines dreamlike motifs from Lewis Carroll’s novel with the neon aesthetics of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Here, Wonderland is an urban landscape filled with absurd encounters and unexpected plot twists. Gruza and Bromski conceived their film as a peculiar blend of a disco musical, a romance, and a crime comedy, in which the episodic narrative is subordinated to musical sequences and the logic of dreams. The title role was played by the Belgian actress Sophie Barjac, singing with the velvety voice of the great Scottish pop star Lulu.
