A photographer (Fabio Testi) falls in love with a B-list actress (Romy Schneider). He decides to help her break free from her artistic and personal impasse, thus entangling both himself and her husband (Jacques Dutronc) in a painful love triangle marked by jealousy and self-sacrifice. From this seemingly straightforward story, Andrzej Żuławski crafts one of the most passionate and uncompromising melodramas in European cinema. It was his first film made in exile after The Devil was blocked from release by the Polish censors. This French, Italian, and West German co-production paved the way for the director’s international career, whilst Schneider’s performance – filled with fragility and desperation – earned her the César for Best Actress, awarded at the inaugural ceremony in 1976. Screening without English subtitles.
