On an isolated island, the dictator Goto imposes a host of absurd rules, restricting the freedom of both his subjects and his beautiful wife. It is Glossi that Grozo, a petty thief, falls in love with; driven by his feelings, he commits increasingly serious crimes. Goto, The Island of Love is an allegory of political dictatorship, but also of the shackles that people put on one another in relationships. This French film, once banned in communist Poland and Francoist Spain, delighted audiences with its form and Walerian Borowczyk’s tactile sensibility – a magnetic blend of textures, temperatures, and bodies.
