Woman on Trial tells the story of a landmark case that shook France and, through the debate it provoked, shaped the generations that followed. In the 1972 trial, sixteen-year-old Marie-Claire, a victim of rape, was charged with having an illegal abortion with the help of her mother and two other women. The verdict of a mostly male jury surprised no one: the rapist went free while the women were sentenced to prison. Only one person stood by them and took the case to appeal: Gisèle Halimi, a fearless activist and a lawyer brave enough to take on the male-dominated system that punished the victim. Fuelling its courtroom tension with the public reaction of the time, this powerful film had its world premiere in the Special Screenings at Cannes.
