One of those films that find the most beautiful way to understand life, and tell it, through cinema. All of a Sudden, which won its two leads the Best Actress award at Cannes, follows a woman who runs a more humane care home for the elderly in Paris, and a Japanese playwright whose illness has reached its final stage. Meeting by chance, the two women form a deep friendship built on the insight that tenderness soothes fragile souls. Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, who won hearts with Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, Evil Does Not Exist and Drive My Car, weaves together the women's closeness and the inevitable passage from life to death with rare delicacy. The film is Japan's Oscar submission.
