Set in 1933 during the Great Depression, this action-packed road movie follows the relentless struggle of a man held in a brutal labour camp after the death of his wife. Clancy, the camp's merciless warden, offers the prisoner Samuel Murphy his freedom in exchange for a gold-smuggling job. On an extremely dangerous road, Murphy must fend off not only the wilderness but threats from within his own crew, and go further than he ever imagined. Set against Oregon's breathtaking landscapes and carried by striking performances from Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, The Weight premiered at Sundance and then screened in the Berlinale's Special Gala section. Recalling Iñárritu's The Revenant and Friedkin's Sorcerer, it is the first feature from Padraic McKinley, one of America's most influential editors.
