Hungarian director László Nemes, whose films examine the turbulent years of the Second World War through a subjective lens, turns to the last days and extraordinary resistance of Jean Moulin, the great hero of the French Resistance. June 1943: France is under Nazi occupation. Moulin is captured while trying to unite the factions of the underground resistance army. Interrogated under torture in Lyon by the ruthless Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie, he never gives in. Nemes, who won the Grand Prix at Cannes with his debut Son of Saul and whose Orphan screened at Filmekimi last year, says: “I wanted the audience to feel like one of Jean Moulin's comrades.” Shot on 35mm and noted for its realism and taut pace, Moulin competed for the Palme d'Or at its Cannes world premiere. Gilles Lellouche plays Moulin, and Lars Eidinger, a frequent guest of the Istanbul Film Festival, plays Barbie.
