James Gray, whose new film has been four years in the waiting, sets a realistic crime plot inside a deeply emotional family drama in the star-studded Paper Tiger. Set in New York in 1986, it follows two brothers, one a former cop, the other an engineer and family man. Believing they can make quick money working for the Russian mafia, the brothers watch their seemingly flawless plan turn into a nightmare that drags in their families. Shot on 35mm and steeped in the atmosphere of the 1980s, the film steadily tightens both its psychological and its crime tension. It competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes and opened the New York Film Festival.
